Applicazione delle ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) per ridurre il Digital Divide

Un secondo incontro (20 dicembre) sarà invece di approfondimento: questo sarà organizzato dalla sezione di Ingegneria Senza Frontiere (ISF), e costituirà un momento di studio più dettagliato delle stesse tematiche proposte nel primo seminario, per una durata totale di circa 3 ore.

ICT technologies for developing countries: the 'Engineering Without Borders' experience by Ing. Valentín Villaroel The talk introduces the objective of a Information Society for all, explains how ICT can improve the social development of poor areas in developing countries and evaluates its constraints in the real world. Some examples of ICT for social development are presented and in particular the experience of a low cost telecommunication technology for primary healthcare in rural areas of Latin America.
Free software and open resources:
Opportunities for reducing the Digital Divide by Prof. Joaquín Seoane The talk briefly introduces free software as a philosophy, software development method, and business model. Its advantages, problems, and risks are discussed, with a focus on developing countries, less developed regions, and poor organizations. Other less known open resources, such as open hardware, are also presented. Political initiatives for free software are reviewed. Finally the talk illustrates known experiences and opportunities for reducing the digital divide in Latin America and Africa.
